As Brother Caleb studies The Book of Shadows, he learns the following:
The Shadow-Desert is a bleak parallel version of our world, a sort of “pocket universe” where the sun shines dimly at best, where shadows are long and indistinct and sometimes appear where no shadow should be. The book states that in many ways, the Shadow-Desert resembles something called the Dreamlands, as it is accessible both physically and via dreams. The book also references a pharmaceutical method of entering the eerie desert world and you learn the spell Create Shadow-Drug (see below).
Many real-world roads exist as faint trails in the Shadow-Desert. Familiar cities and towns may appear as mirages or shadows, and in other cases the settlements (or slightly different versions of them) may actually exist as ghost towns inhabited only by specters and more shadows. The only supplies to be found in the Shadow-Desert are those that can be gathered (like firewood), hunted (animals), or taken from other inhabitants (e.g. ammunition or gear taken from a fellow traveler); in the ghost towns of Shadow only the buildings exist, not the whiskey, food, guns, or horses.
Anyone physically present in the Shadow-Desert who dies is actually dead, though he or she may stalk the Shadows as a specter thereafter; dreamers slain there lose 1D8 Sanity points and awaken in the real world when the spell or drug that sent them there wears off.
• Cost: 5 POW and 1D3 Sanity points
• Casting time: 5 minutes of singing
This rare recipe is known to a few southwestern American Indian medicine men. It requires a variety of ingredients, mostly animal bones and herbs (some of which can only be obtained in the Shadow-Desert itself ). Each casting creates 1D6+6 individual doses of the drug. The drug can either be ingested or smoked, and costs 1D6 magic points and 1D4 Sanity points to use. The effects appear 15 to 20 minutes after the drug has been taken.
The drug makes the user sleepy, and when it takes effect he or she falls into a deep sleep from which they will not rise until the dose has worn off. Each dose lasts 2D6+2 hours; additional doses add the same amount of time again. Additional doses are dangerous, however, as each dose after the first requires a successful CON roll, otherwise the user’s body enters a coma, leaving his or her mind trapped in the Shadow-Desert. For up to two doses, the CON roll is Regular, for three to four doses it is Hard, and for any more the roll is Extreme.
Sign posts in San Rafael advertise that Dr. Albert’s Astounding Medicine Show is coming to town in the next few weeks and everyone seems to be excited. The posters promise music, dancing girls, feats of strength, and a real wild man, but the real attraction is Dr. Albert's Astounding Restorative Elixir that promises to cure everything from Gout to Small Pox in 17 days or less.
You have heard that Mrs. Allie Garrett plans to buy a crate of the elixir for her daughter, Polly, who is prone to fits, and that the Dalton Boys (ages 9 and 7) are going to try to sneak a peek inside the medicine wagon during the show and see what kind of strange things are in there. Judd Luckey, the town drunk has been telling his drinking buddies that he's going to buy some of the Elixir too, hoping it will cure his desire to drink.
They say that the desert surrounds your every step and you walk forever a thirsty man. It’s supposed to mean something like, we, as humans, are never satisfied. It means that we are always searching for something. You know, we all have different wants and needs, but the satisfaction derived from the fleeting things of life is not lasting; our wants remain unfulfilled. There is a general sense of dissatisfaction accompanied by all kinds of worries.
Life in San Rafael, TX has been a little more lively than usual, and it seems like just as things start to slow down a little, something else happens that throws the town into a frenzy. Recent rumors indicate that the Sandoval family is furious after one of the Sandoval boys was blown to bits in a dynamite duel gone bad, and word around town is that the family is licking their wounds and waiting for the right time to get even with the man on the other side of the duel.
That's honestly child's play compared to what happened over at the Azoulay Diner on Sunday afternoon, though. While residents of San Rafael were eating dinner, a group of investigators deputized by the Town Marshall to find Bill Foster started chasing Yonatan Azoulay through the restaurant and a giant flaming worm appeared as if from out of nowhere and started wreaking havoc.
The town found out later that the Azoulay family were cannibals and they had poor Bill Foster in the basement of their house, cutting him up piece by piece, but truth be told, that hardly mattered to San Rafael after nearly 30 residents were killed by the flaming worm in the Diner.
44 is less than 51%, so Frankie was successful. While reading The Necronomicon she discovered two ways that strength might be increased.
The first is by contacting Nyarlothotep and serving him in exchange for strength.
The second is by a spell called "Body Warping." The Necronomicon tells of a sorcerer in the Middle Ages who warped his body into the form of another and thereby became fearsome strong. However, the spell itself does not appear in the Necronomicon.
The necklace you acquired from the cave looks something like this, although the chain and setting are more bronze than gold and the chain links are larger.
You spend a few days scouring your father's notes and looking through the library on campus (I can't remember whether your father worked at St. Damien's or the community college), but are not able to find anything that matches the description of the necklace or its effect on the man from the cave.

It is a beautiful Sunday morning in Pinebox, NM and a group of people get together at Dr. Lisa Sands' home for some mimosa's and light conversation. Suddenly, a radio broadcast goes out saying that a sandstorm is fast approaching Pinebox and that it is the recommendation of the Weather Service and the Pinebox Police Department that all citizens stay indoors.
A few members of the party, looking out and listening to the storm, hear a disturbance next door. When they go to check it out, they see a group of 5 hooded figures trying to abduct a couple. Two of the kidnappers tell the other three to block their escape as they grab the male in the couple. Bob recognizes that one of the five is an old co-worker, Joshua Wright, and is able to talk him down. Bushrod chases down the two making a break for the backdoor, but is hit with a powder which causes him to hallucinate. Albert attacks one of the three, ultimately killing him in a violent rage. In the end, one kidnapper dies, two escape (with a hostage) and two are placated.
Back at Lisa's, some information is learned: Abigail, the female in the couple from next door, tells the party that shortly after the sandstorm started, a group of people stormed in and threw some black powder on them, making her and her boyfriend Marty hallucinate. She remembers that she was asked about her purity, where she felt compelled to answer truthfully -- that she wasn't. Marty said he was, so they decided to take him rather than leave empty-handed. She remembers them saying that the "backup woman" was at the Middle School.
Joshua tells the party that he's unsure why he was following the orders, but he had no choice -- that when he was told to come to this house and kidnap a woman named Abigail, he simply complied. When asked who gave him his orders, he tells them it was Martin Cavanaugh, the Pinebox Chief of Police. He also says that he remembers hearing that 4 kidnapping were to take place: one here, one at Vestal Hills Mobile Park, one at the Old City Landfill and one at the Middle School.
Armed with this information, the party decides to go to the Middle School. Once they get there, they see more hooded figures guarding the place. Ultimately, they discover the woman, Jessica Barnes, and a boy child, Irving Carson, inside the music room. They are not able to escape silently however and are forced to fight their way out, but ultimately succeed in getting Irving and Jessica to safety. As they leave, the sandstorm seems to abate.

@justin said in Bob Barret, USPS:
If what you meant was calling him to see if he knew/found something that could/would have happened during downtime, we could probably resolve that pretty quick at the table too.
This is more what I was thinking. A sort of flashback scene or something.
Working at Pinebox General Hospital, you're able to find some unused lab equipment to conduct these tests. As you search for the Blood Type and Chemical Composition, you find that it doesn't fit into anything that would be considered "normal or human". There are human "elements" to it, but there are also things that completely defy your medical training. You expand your testing and also find that aspects of the composition also resembles that of a snake. The combination of human and snake elements accounts for most of the composition, and the parts that don't seem all together alien.
Given the strange aspects of the blood and the lack of cutting-edge medical equipment, there's no way for you to "replicate" the blood.
You can buy the mice. What would you like to do with them? Also recognize that the equipment you are using right now is in a Hospital Lab.
Lastly, Emily tagged you as a possible recipient for certain items found in the warehouse -- namely, a series of vials and a notebook found in the lab.
Lab: In this lab, you see cages with various animals in them: rats, frogs and bats mostly and almost all are dead. The manner of death in each cage varies, but it looks violent in almost all cases. In certain cages, you see that the animals have been placed together and it seems as though they killed each other. You also see various beakers and vials. In particular, you find sets of vials: 2 containing a grey-green liquid, 2 with red liquid, and two with a clear liquid that has strands of silver that seem to appear and disappear at random. You also find a notebook nearby.
Let me know if there's anything you'd like to do with them. These tasks will all fall under "Downtime Activities" and depending on what you want to do, you might have to prioritize some actions, but we'll cross that bridge if we cross it.

Doctor Max Stone, along with five graduate students were reported missing and a group of investigators consisting of college students, a professor, a cab driver, an EMT, and a war vet set out to uncover the truth. They first visit Doctor Stone’s house where they find an invoice from Allen Excavation, a letter from the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division, and a locked box under the bed containing notes about a strange temple. One of the students decides to check Doctor Stone’s computer and finds a map of the excavation site on his desktop.
The investigators decide to stock up and then they head out to the desert to check out the temple that Doctor Stone was excavating. They travel inside and find several members of the dig crew as well as all of the missing students dead, but Doctor Stone is nowhere to be found. Seeing the dead bodies disturbs one of the investigators, Naked Nathan, and he explodes in a fit of rage attacking other investigators. The EMT rushes into action and uses a fast acting drug to knock him out.
As the investigators explore the temple they find strange artifacts including armor made of some kind of web and some kind of alien gun. They also find a strange powder, a colorless serum that smells of raspberries, and a foul smelling green liquid. Each room of the temple is searched and a strange circular room with weird symbols is found in one part of the temple, and in another, a strange mirror is found.
The investigators decide to try and leave, but on the way out, a strange dog-like beast attacks killing the war vet. The investigators realize that the monster is materializing out of corners in the room and retreat to the circular room, closing the door to keep the monster out while they work up a plan. Eventually, the investigators decide to lure the monster into the circular room and then run out the door, closing it behind them and locking the monster in. They set the plan in motion and it works. The investigators leave the temple and vow to never go back.

Act 1: Is that you, John Wayne? Is this me?
The party wakes up in an emptied-out and broken down movie theater. Nine men and women are in the room and all of them are naked. Philip notices that his boyfriend, Logan, is with him. The investigators all notice that part of the roof is missing on the northeast side of the building, but when they focus their eyes and look out, all they can see is a bright white fog. In the middle of the room the investigators notice four snake-like sculptures arranged in a circle with a large wooden pulpit in the center. Bushrod decides to investigate and finds a book of Nursery Rhymes called simply, “Ye Old Nursery Rhymes,” and he begins to read from the book:
The Grand Old Duke of York
The Grand old Duke of York he had ten thousand men
He marched them up to the top of the hill
And he marched them down again.
When they were up, they were up
And when they were down, they were down
And when they were only halfway up
They were neither up nor down.
After reading the poem, Bushrod remembers that the poem was about the death of Richard, Duke of York, claimant to the English throne and Protector of England and the Battle of Wakefield on December 30, 1460.
Philip gets impatient and starts investigating the statues. He tries to push one over but it won’t budge. Bushrod notices him and starts pushing as well and the statue tumbles to the ground, breaking into a thousand pieces. The investigators all grab chunks of the statue to use as a weapon.
While Philip and Bushrod are pushing the statue over, Joshua Lee sneaks off behind the screen to see if the door he remembered from his last excursion to the Dream Lands Amusement Park was still there and he easily finds out.
Bushrod, Lucretia, Philip, and Joshua regroup and then decide to usher the other inhabitants into the room behind the screen after a man gets impatient and bolts out the big double doors at the front of the theater.
Act 2: I AM... in a world... of shit.
As the investigators leave the movie theater with the intent of heading to the gift shop they run into a lone clown riding a unicycle and juggling flaming torches. Joshua Lee recognizes the man as Jacob Jackson, a man that disappeared after working a shift at the amusement park several years ago and was never found. Joshua encountered Jacob the last time he was at the Amusement park and Jacob greets Joshua by name and asks to be introduced to his new friends.
After introductions are made, Jacob tells the party that they are in the dream of the great Yig. Everyone seems concerned but they continue on to the nearest gift shop.
In the gift shop, everyone gets dressed in cowboy gear and then they search the place for any weapons they can find. Lucretia spots a fake gun with a real knife protruding from the barrel and takes it. Bushrod finds a mop and breaks the stick off at an angle, creating a makeshift spear.
Act 3: The dead know only one thing: it is better to be alive
After gearing up, and grabbing clothes the investigators head back towards the movie theater but as they walk, the amusement park begins to change and shift. The investigators heads’ begin to hurt and their skulls starts to feel two sizes too small for their brains. The ground and all of the buildings start to bleed a thick rust that pours out of every surface and overtakes the park. A strange man with a rifle and bayonet stumbles towards the investigators and leaps at Philip Landrum, stabbing him in the side and doing significant damage. Bushrod sees this and stabs the man with his makeshift spear, killing him instantly, but then he notices strange red bugs crawling up the stick from the open wound and he drops it and backs up. Lucretia jumps in and lights the stick on fire and the bugs act as fuel, incinerating the mop handle.
The investigators watch as the man’s skin melts away while the world shifts and the rust disappears.
Act 4: What is your major malfunction, numbnuts?
Back at the movie theater, Philip and Logan reunite and Logan is concerned about Philips injury and refuses to leave his side again. Clothes are given to the other people in the theater and then Lucretia has an idea, she wants to find alcohol. Bushrod wonders if there is a castle themed restaurant in the park and Joshua confirms that there is, and that it’s on a hill. The investigators, along with Logan, decide to head in that direction.
As the investigators walk towards the restaurant they spot two Serpent Men sitting in the middle of the road. They approach the serpent men cautiously and engage them in conversation. The Serpent Men claim to be trapped in Yig’s dream. They tell the investigators they were searching underneath the amusement park in the real world for Ancient Serpent Men buried somewhere beneath Pinebox when they somehow got trapped in Yig’s dream. The investigators are skeptical but they agree to work with the Serpent Men for the time being and head off towards the restaurant.
Act 5: Sir... does this mean that Ann-Margret's not coming?
The investigators arrive at the castle restaurant and Philip uses his engineering skills to lower the draw bridge door down while Logan cheers him on. As everyone walks into the restaurant they see statues lining the entrance way and a large Throne at the end of the room that they assume the host or hostess would typically sit in. Above the throne is a banner with a rose.
The investigators continue on into the restaurant proper and spot a child hiding beneath one of the tables. Lucretia calls out to him and is able to convince the boy that his mother sent her to protect him from the monster under his bed.
All of the investigators pile into the kitchen to look for weapons and alcohol. As they are looking around, Lucretia and Philip spot and take several bottles of top shelf bourbon.
As the investigators start to leave the kitchen, the room starts to shift and rust once again melts out of every surface. A picture on the wall begins to swirl, and moments later a strange bipedal beast emerges from the painting and attacks. During the fight, everyone but Bushrod takes a major wound, but they are finally able to take the creature down after dousing it with alcohol and lighting it on fire.
Act 6: We shoot 'em full of holes and fill 'em full of lead.
The investigators get frustrated with all of the monsters and decide they have had enough. They find a working gas stove, flood the castle restaurant with gas, and throw a match on their way out, completely destroying the restaurant. Unfortunately, this backfires and attracts the attention of a strange ape with four arms and six eyes. The beast spots the investigators and barrels down towards them. Luckily, the investigators think quickly, use the bottles of alcohol as Molotov Cocktails, take aim, and unleash five Molotov’s at once on the beast, vanquishing it.
As the beast dies, the investigators black out and wake up back at home in their bed.
