Is Slur Your Role the kind of thing a complete newbie could attend? I haven't played D&D since high school which was...well, a long time ago. I'm interested in playing again, but don't know where to start. I'm not from Louisville originally, so it's been hard to find a group open to an outsider and newbie.

I think SYR is great for newbies because they usually play one shot sessions (someone correct me if I'm wrong). But it seems like the DnD games tend to fill up quickly. If you're not planning to drink, Friday night at Heroes Comics would also be good.

@chas_the_mystic Thanks so much! This is great information.

@dustinlull Slur is GREAT for new players!
-
@jonathan-meadows thanks!!

Agreed. SYR is a good way for new players to get a taste to roleplaying without committing to a full-on campaign or something. Also, you can kind of pop around and get to see a variety of GM styles and games. I've met so many people who tried a game once, didn't like the GM or something, and thought all roleplaying was like that one experience. Having the ability to test out a couple games is a godsend.
-
Also agreed! I didn’t know a single person in the area when I moved to Louisville 3 years ago (wow, been here this long?). 2 years ago I tried out Slur, and now seems all my non work or family time is spent playing or trying to play more games.
So...take that as encouragement or a warning as you will.

@lane I'm embarrassed to admit that I was here in Louisville for four years or so before I really met anyone. When I found Nerd Louisville and Slur, that all changed and I have made so many fantastic connections and friends because of it.

"Do NOT go to SYR or you WILL make friends!"

I'm the odd man out on this one. Being a former alcoholic, I avoid bars and breweries except for a few minutes at a time when circumstances warrant.
So I make my friends and play my games elsewhere. But there are plenty of opportunities around, so having to skip out on SYR doesn't cramp my style.
