The Bonding House

  • There are a couple types of hirelings you can recruit to work for you at The Bonding House in Muntburg. Available hirelings are updated on occasion as people come and go from Muntburg, get hired on with other parties, etc.

In addition to their wages, most contracts for retainers include the employer providing food & lodging, medical expenses, and an assurance their wages will be delivered to their family in the event of a death. Adryen Hermen charges a 10% fee of the negotiated contract and most folks don't sign on to a contract with an adventuring company unless it passes under the scrutiny of Hermen.

    Types of Hirelings

Mercenaries: these are 0-level soldiers (militia, barbarians, footmen, cavalry, etc.) who can be hired as guards and military forces. They are not willing to go into a dungeon, but will guard an encampment, garrison a fort, provide security for a caravan, etc. Their wages are listed on page 48 of the Labyrinth Lord file. During wartime, double these wages.

Specialists: these are people with a special skill (e.g. alchemist, sage, camp cook, porter, etc.) hired on staff or for a one-time task. These wages are found on pages 47-48 of the Labyrinth Lord file. Most specialists won't go into Dwimmermount, but a few braver (or desperate) souls will. Torchbearers, porters, squires, and laborers will accompany a party for 5 gp each per expedition. They are non-combatants and their morale is equal to a commoner militia (6).

Retainers: these are folks who are actually willing to enter Dwimmermount with you and take risks, join in combat. A character may only hire a number of retainers their Charisma score permits. Retainers expect a fee per expedition (the going rate is 10 gp for 0-level retainers and level x 100 gp for characters with a level) and characters with exceptional abilities or skills might request more pay, additional equipment, etc. Expeditions are generally expected to last a few days and no more than 10 days. In addition to their wages, retainers also expect 1/2 share of treasure found and consideration for any magical items discovered, like a normal member of the party. Failure to pay, poor treatment, being overlooked for magic items, over-extended expeditions, casualties and death, etc. can all affect a willingness for retainers to hire on again. And, word of rampant deaths and mistreatment by the employers will spread among patrons of The Bonding House quickly. A retainer that goes on many expeditions under the employ of an adventurer might eventually become a henchman.

Henchman: henchmen are loyal sidekicks who serve a player character. Generally, a retainer must go on at least 3-4 expeditions before even considering entering the permanent employ of a player character. A henchman joins and becomes full fledged member of the adventuring company. Unlike retainers, henchmen do not expect a fee for an adventure. However, henchmen expect a full share of treasure just like any other member of the adventuring company.

NPC Party: NPC parties can be hired to perform missions in and out of Dwimmermount. Some are monthly missions (act as informers in Muntburg or Adamas, build a shrine, help plan an assault, etc.), weekly missions (camp out in Dwimmermount to perform some mundane task), or daily missions (assault a location in Dwimmermount). Wages depend on the experience and number of the party and the level of danger on the mission.

While the player will manage hirelings, especially on an expedition, the DM has final say over how a hireling will act, what they will do, and whether they require a morale check or not.

    Types

Does Not Level - 5gp per Expedition (1-10 days)

A fool is someone willing to take risks and interact with dangerous traps.
A porter carries gear (e.g. sherpa).
A torchbearer will carry torches or lanterns for the party.
A laborer will do manual labor; dig, demolish, build, etc.

    0-Levels 10gp per expedition + 1/2 share of treasure

A squire tends to equipment and assists Fighters in battle. Will become a 1st level Fighter.
An apprentice aids a Magic-User in scribing, study, etc. Will become a 1st level Magic-User.
A hoodlum will assist a Thief in finding/removing traps, picking locks, etc. Will become a 1st level Thief.
An acolyte will aid a Cleric in performing holy rites, prayer, etc. Will become a 1st level Cleric.

Leveled 100gp x level per expedition + 1/2 share of treasure or full share if the same than the employer
