    • The Dreamlands

I have run a session where the characters entered the dreamlands*, and a couple other sessions where the dreamlands were referenced. This topic explains the rules for how the dreamlands work, at least when I am GMing. Other GMs may run the dreamlands differently. The dreamlands are not bound by the rules of logic, so there is no requirement of consistency.

(* Not to be confused with the Dreamland Amusement Park outside of Pinebox. That's a place that is at least partly in the real world. This topic is about the alternate shared dimension that characters can enter while they are dreaming)

      Dreamlands Rules

      • For every hour that passes in the real world, one day passes in the dreamlands. Dreamers do not age in the dreamlands, but when they re-enter the dreamlands, they have aged at the rate they aged in the real world.

      • In the dreamlands everyone speaks and understands the same language. Dreamers from different countries who speak different languages in the waking world will find themselves speaking the same language in the dreamlands. A book written in an unknown foreign language that is physically transported to the dreamlands will be understandable in the dreamlands as if it were written in the reader's own language.

      • First time dreamers will normally appear in the Cavern of Flame before descending the 700 steps to the Gate of Deeper Slumber, which leads to the Enchanted Forest. They will then lose d4/1 SAN and gain a dreaming skill = 1/5 WILL (their extreme WILL save).

      • Experienced dreamers will normally appear in the dreamlands at the place where they last left when they woke up. A dreamer can enter at the Cavern of Flame instead by making a dreaming skill check (if they know they can try). If they make an extreme dreaming check, they can reappear at any other public place in the dreamlands that they have visited before.

      • If you are killed or knocked unconscious by a major wound in the dreamlands, your dream will end. You will disappear in the dreamlands and wake up in the real world. You can also end your dream by succeeding in a dreaming skill check. If it fails, you can try again each day in the dreamlands (each hour of sleep).

      • Any physical wounds that a dreamer suffers will disappear when they exit and re-enter the dreamlands. A dreamer who dies in the dreamlands will lose d20/d4 SAN but will be able to re-enter the dreamlands.

      • If you are killed in the real world while dreaming, you will continue to live in the dreamlands until you are also killed in the dreamlands.

      • Dreamers can change their immediate environment in the dreamlands by using their dreaming skill and expending magic points. This always requires a full round of concentration (taking no other action).
...To change a minor detail requires a dreaming skill check and costs 1 magic point (whether it succeeds or fails). Examples: acquiring a small item such as a dagger or coin, or wearing different shoes.
...To change a significant detail requires a hard dreaming skill check and costs d4 magic points (whether it succeeds or fails). Examples: causing chains that bind you to disappear, suddenly having armor or a purse full of gold, a boat appearing as you are drowning, a minor NPC disappearing, such as a street vendor, shortening a journey.
...To change a major detail requires an extreme dreaming skill check and costs d12 magic points (whether it succeeds or fails). Examples: a dangerous opponent disappearing, creating a castle that appears over the next hill, being able to fly.

    • RE: Jakub Nowak / Robert Webster

Justin, player of Jakub - Last night under a gibbous moon, there gathered a conclave of Cthulhu's Keepers to decide your fate. Behold the verdict of our hive mind!...

Jakub is waiting on Jeremy Redtree who left town to procure Jakub's fake ID, but Jorge (aka @Gombar), Jeremy's player, has been absent. Therefore until @Gombar returns to the table, Jeremy Redtree is still out-of-town, his fate unknown. When @Gombar plays Jeremy Redtree again, we shall require him to make an INT roll to determine his success in acquiring a fake ID for Jakub.

If Jeremy rolls an EXXTREME! success, Jakub will obtain all the documents needed for an entirely fake identity that would withstand any law enforcement investigation - identity theft of a real U.S. citizen who went missing as a child with no surviving close relatives including a real birth certificate and social security card, plus a high school diploma from a real school that no longer operates.

On a HARD success, he gets a fake social security card for a real social security number, and a fake driver's license that looks very genuine. They will withstand a routine background check, but not in-depth research.

On a regular success he will get a mediocre fake SS card and driver's license, but any cop or clerk who sees them can make an EDU check. On a HARD success, the cop or clerk will become very suspicious that they are fake.

In the event of a failure, Jeremy returned empty-handed. Maybe his underworld contacts let him down, maybe Jeremy forgot, but bottom line no ID for Jakub.

If Jeremy rolls a fumble though....the conclave of Cthulhu's Keepers failed to consider that option under last night's gibbous moon. If Jeremy fumbles, Jakub and Jeremy will be at the mercy of the GM at the table.

Meanwhile until Jeremy gets back, Jakub remains undocumented, unless he comes up with another way to get ID.

Thanks! As the father of two black nerds, I am always interested in this topic. I've got a lot of driving to do this weekend, so I needed something to listen to.

On a related note, there are just a few days left to back the kickstarter for Harlem Unbound: A Cthulhu RPG Sourcebook. I heard about it when they interviewed the author on the KARTAS podcast. We've talked about the challenges of recognizing H P Lovecraft's genius as a horror author while criticizing his racism. It's also a challenge to run "classic era" (1920s) Cthulhu stories because of the racism of the era. Here an African-American RPG author tackles these challenges head-on.

    • The Subterranean Empire of K’n-yan (Wolves of Blood + Honor)

Call of Cthulhu Pinebox Episode 1, played 9/11/2016.

      • Bianca played Mercedes Perez, Engineering Student from Tijuana, attending St Damian University. Unsure about plans after graduation. Lover of Raquel.
      • Cydney played Raquel Horowitz, Archeology graduate student (TA) at St. Damian U. From Chicago. Interested in local myths. Jewish. Lover of Mercedes.
      • Derrick played HW Black, Fiction Author. HW wants to write a novel based on local mythical creatures, so he is renting a place in Pinebox temporarily to do research and write the novel. Met Earl and Raquel online.
      • Marnix played Earl Suther, Tyler’s little brother. High School nerd in brother’s shadow.
      • Bill played Tyler Suther, born in Pinebox. 19 yrs old. Student at SWNMCC (Southwest New Mexico Community College). The SWNMCC mascot used to be Red Mexicans, but is now the Monarchs.
      • Jeff played Dirty Frank the drug dealer. Born in California. From everywhere. 28 yrs old. Male. Picked up Lucin on way to town. Deals drugs to Tyler and Raquel.
      • Rhonda played Lucin Ledbetter, female high school rebel. Born in Phoenix. 15 yrs old. Ran away from foster care. Hitchhiked to Pinebox with Dirty Frank. Knows Earl from the bowling alley, where she defended him from bullies.

It is Sunday, November 6, 2016. Tyler and Earl Suther are throwing a party while their parents are out of town. All of the PCs are enjoying a barbeque at the Suther House at the end of a cul-de-sac.

Earl and Tyler’s step-brother Cody shows up. This is the first time they’ve seen Cody in months, since he joined a right-wing survivalist group. Cody explains that the survivalist group, the Wolves of Blood + Honor, have entered an underground complex in the nearby National Park. Cody tells them that his group leader learned about the complex in a dream, and they were going to use it to take refuge during the coming race war.
Cody shows them a heavy gold amulet with a large jewel. It weighs several pounds. The other survivalists brought it back to the surface after they explored the underground site. Cody stole the amulet and escaped. Cody intends to sell the amulet and flee to South America. Cody wants advice from Tyler to figure out how to do it.
Cody drinks and celebrates. The Wolves of Blood & Honor call him on his walkie-talkie. “Thor, this is Wolf Base. Come in Thor.” Prompted by the other characters, Cody responds to the radio call, telling the wolves that he is fleeing from law-enforcement that is in hot pursuit.
Cody asks for some music. Lucin pulls up “Five Finger Death Punch” on her laptop playlist.

Cody puts on the amulet, and suddenly becomes robotic. The gem in the amulet starts to glow bright red, and it starts to burn Cody through his shirt. Cody speaks in an unnatural and alien voice, saying “What is this Place?” Tyler blasts Cody with a fire extinguisher. Cody attacks him, but Tyler easily throws Cody to the ground and restrains him. In the same unnatural voice, Cody tells him “You have defeated me. I grant you the amulet.” Earl removes the amulet from Cody. Cody returns to his normal redneck self, in pain from third-degree burns on his chest.
Earl feels the power of the amulet compelling him to wear it, but he is able to resist.
Dirty Frank decides to steal the amulet. There is a fight. It is interrupted by another call on Cody’s walkie-talkie. “Thor, this is Wolf Leader. We’ve got your place surrounded. Come out with your hands up.” The PCs look out the windows. A big Dodge Crew-Cab is sitting in the cul-de-sac. A jeep and a Suburban have pulled around behind the house. Each vehicle has several armed survivalists. Cody’s walkie talkie is also a GPS, enabling the wolves to easily track him.

There is a standoff and mass confusion among the people at the party. Several try to escape or to confuse the Wolves of Blood + Honor outside, and eventually a gunfight breaks out. Tyler makes a run for the car, armed only with a fire extinguisher. He throws it at a survivalist, hitting him in the head so hard that he kills him. The other survivalist shoots Tyler three times. Tyler dies instantly.

Jackson, aka “Wolf Leader” kicks down the front door and enters the house. Mercedes, one of the party guests, shoots Wolf Leader in the chest, but it has no apparent effect except to knock him back briefly. There is a bullet hole in his shirt but no blood. He tells them to give up if they want to live. The rest of the characters surrender. Wolf Leader orders Earl to put the amulet on the ground. The wolves stow the amulet in a bag, being careful not to directly touch it.
The wolves take the amulet, Cody, and the bodies of Tyler and the dead survivalist. They drive away. The Five Finger Death Punch song comes to an end.

    • RE: Lfg!

I recommend coming to Kaiju this Sunday afternoon Apr 23 for "Slur Your Role." Get there before 4pm. It's an event we hold every two weeks. There will be six tables playing D&D and other RPGs. They aren't ongoing groups with dedicated members; all tables are open to new players. It's a good way to meet local gamers and find a regular group. If this Sunday doesn't work, try Heroes Comics and Gaming on Friday April 28th at 8pm: It's basically the same thing, but for all ages, in a game shop instead of a bar. Hope to see you there!

It lists upcoming nerdy events in town. I plan to update it approximately weekly. If you have any events to share, send them to nerdalert@nerdlouisville.org.

I am maintaining it for now. Insha Allah, someone else will take over at some point. If you think that running the nerd alert would be a fun way to volunteer for NerdLouisville, let us know!

I can't list every event in every game shop, so it has links to the webpages or facebook pages for the shops that have their own event calendars. Let me know if I should add any game shops to the list or add links to any other nerdy groups.

I'm going to do my best to curate the list so that it has the most value for someone seeking a nerdy good time in Louisville and so that maintaining the list doesn't become a full-time job. I'm going to restrict it to only events in the Louisville metro area (Jefferson County and the counties that border it), not the larger region. The schedule for the upcoming week will normally have new events, not regularly recurring events - there's just too many of them (except it will have our Nerd Louisville events - let us be a little selfish like that). If you have a NEW regularly recurring event, let me know and I'll put the first occurrence on the upcoming weekly list.

    • Novus Mundium Campaign Basic Info

Novus Mundium is a campaign setting for the Nerd Louisville DnD Multiverse. All of the DnD Multiverse conventions are in effect. The name refers to the city around which the story is based.

For centuries, the Great Empire has dominated the lands around the Middle Sea. Generations ago, the Empire established Novus Mundium as a trading outpost on the distant and exotic Eastern Continent. An Imperial edict prohibited the inhabitants from venturing outside of the city, in order to maintain friendly trading relations with the natives and avoid local entanglements.
Now the empire is in chaos. As nomadic barbarians invade from the North, a civil war rages between rivals who claim the throne. The Imperial governor and his legion have been withdrawn. Novus Mundium is now effectively an independent city state. Therefore it is no longer bound by the Imperial edict: there is nothing to stop adventurers from exploring the Eastern Continent.

44 is less than 51%, so Frankie was successful. While reading The Necronomicon she discovered two ways that strength might be increased.

      • The first is by contacting Nyarlothotep and serving him in exchange for strength.
      • The second is by a spell called "Body Warping." The Necronomicon tells of a sorcerer in the Middle Ages who warped his body into the form of another and thereby became fearsome strong. However, the spell itself does not appear in the Necronomicon.

@lirilia said in The Necronomicon Expedition:

@andyb did you find out how to recover strength?

Unfortunately, strength drain from a Dark Young is permanent, and there are no rules in CoC for improving characteristics naturally. There are, however, rules for improving skills through training, so I think we can apply a similar principle to allow improvement of characteristics through training: After four months of training, you can roll vs your strength. If you roll higher than your current strength, your strength increases by d6. In story terms, you are doing physical therapy or weight training.

You can also try to increase your strength by unnatural means. While Frankie was in the dreamlands, she could have learned something along those lines from *The Necronomicon. The Mythos Rating of The Necronomicon is 51%, so let's try the online dice roller...

    • RE: The Necronomicon Expedition

Doctor Hunter Warren and twelve of his Archeology 101 students have disappeared. Before they disappeared, the students all sent emails or texts or social media texts to friends and loved ones saying that they were going on a mission of self-discovery.
The characters are all friends or roommates of some of the missing students. They are summoned to the dean’s office in an effort to determine what has happened. Afterwards, they work together to try to find the missing students.

      CHARACTERS

      • Jacob as Chad Newark, the drug dealer, lover of missing student Cypress Jones.
      • Chandler as Andrew Rosco, college baseball player, who is enrolled in the Archeology 101 course but hasn’t been attending.
      • Justin as Francois Fecheria, male model, friend of mssing student Zane Rogers.
      • Aaron as Cobb, taxi driver, the last to see several students.
      • Alex as Sensei Patrick Hardesty, Aikido Instructor, who taught two of the missing students, Hannah and Emily.
      • Liz as Frankie Nelson, Engineering Student. Roommate of missing student Agnes Minors.

      SUMMARY

From the dean they learn that Professor Warren led an expedition to Greece back in the Spring Semester, and that some students disappeared from that trip and others committed suicide shortly thereafter, which is why the dean is so concerned.
They ask the dean to search Dr. Warren’s office. Chad finds and steals an ornate dagger. They search his computer.
Dr. Warren had a reminder set for the previous night labelled “Mnar Trip.”

They see that Dr. Randy Carter recently contacted him by email, writing “Saw you in Celephais. Would like to meet in the daytime world.”
The students contact Dr. Randy Carter. Carter is the new director of the St. Damian’s Sleep Lab. He replaced Dr. Blodian, who exploded (see “The Subterranean Empire of K’n-yan, Episode 5 https://community.nerdlouisville.org/topic/153/the-subterranean-empire-of-k-n-yan-wolves-of-blood-honor/10). They meet him at the Sleep Center. He reveals that he saw Dr. Warren in Celephais in the dreamlands. But Warren flew away on a Byakee before he could speak to him. Carter heard that Warren had recovered the Greek Necronomicon and is interested in it.
Carter offers to bring the characters into the dreamlands via “Guided Dreaming” if they return to the Sleep Center at 11PM.
Carter tells them that St. Damian’s is the best place to study dreaming, because Yig lies beneath Pinebox.

While at the Sleep Center, Frankie gets a call from Michelle Minors, the mother of her missing roommate, Agnes. Mrs. Minors tells her that she had a terrible dream about Agnes the previous night. Michelle Rogers saw Agnes held captive in the Dreamlands. She saw the students manacled to a rock in a marshy wilderness on the shore of a lake, with the ruins of a great city in the distance. The walls of the city were marble and hundreds of feet high. Within the walls were towers even higher of multi-colored stone. Nearby there was a doorframe standing alone in the desert, and through the doorframe she saw stars and nebulae. A man stood nearby at an altar. He wore a robe covered with arcane symbols and he was reading a massive book at the altar. On the altar were knives and tools covered in blood, and the altar was stained with blood. There was a huge creature standing by the man. A four-armed creature with a fanged mouth at the top of its head.
Mrs. Minors says “Agnes said that she had hoped and prayed for me and that she had brought me there with his hopes and prayers. She begged me to save her, but how could I? Then the robed man at the altar turned and saw me. "Well, well, we have a guest." He commanded the four armed creature. "Seize her!" It came towards me. I ran through the marsh away from it. I stumbled and it caught me. And then I woke up.”
Randy Carter tells them that the marble city sounds like the ruins of Sarnath, which lies in the dreamlands realm of Mnar. He gives them a map of the dreamlands.

The investigators go to Dr. Warren’s house and break in. Chad breaks a basement window and peeks in. He sees a byakee and goes insane, acquiring a long-term fear of dark entrances.
They go down into the basement, where they fight the byakee and kill it. Once killed, it disappears.
      0_1507596070067_Byakhee.png
Cobb drives a car through the basement door.
In the basement, they find a rack of medieval weapon in front of a gateway to the dreamlands. They outfit themselves with swords, maces, etc and step through the gateway.
Francois has seen enough and flees.

On the other side, they find themselves in the marshy wilderness outside of the ruins of Sarnath, as describes in Mrs. Minors’ dream.
Chad negotiates a deal with the wizard, Dr. Warren, to return his magical dagger if he will release Cypress and take Frankie instead. Dr. Warren sends his Dark Young of Shub Niggurath to take Frankie.
Dr. Warren reveals that he went to the dreamlands because it enabled him to read the book and expanded time. He took the students because real-world Earthlings make the best sacrifices. He is attempting to call Shub-Niggurath.
Cobb leaves through the gate and abandons the others.
Patrick Hardesty attempts to fight Dr. Warren, but is trampled by the Dark Young and killed.
Rosco charges Dr Warren. Warren casts a spell of withering, ruining Rosco’s leg. Rosco hops on and knocks Dr. Warren unconscious, but the Dark Young of Shub Niggurath fights on against Frankie. Frankie chops off her roommate’s hand to free her and they run, but the Dark Young pursues and grabs Frankie again. Frankie chops off two of the Dark Young’s tentacles. The Dark Young drains Frankie’s strength, reducing Frankie to 15 Strength before the fight is over.
Chad retreats through the gate and destroys it, then burns down the house. He has acquired an indefinite insanity: Fear of firearms.
Rosco looks at the Necronomicon. Even though it is in Greek, in the Dreamlands all languages are the same, so he can read it. He reads through it looking for a picture of the creature fighting Frankie. Eventually, he finds the spells to Summon, Bind, or Dispel Dark Young of Shub Niggurath. He reads the spell of binding and takes control of the creature, saving Frankie. He commands the Dark Young to free all of the students from their manacles.
      0_1507596176343_sombre rejeton1.JPG

They are trapped in the dreamlands, but Rosco and Frankie read the Necronomicon and find the spell to create a gateway. It requires a sacrifice of 20 POW, but they share the cost with the students, so that each loses only 2 POW. They re-establish the gate.
Rosco, Frankie, and the students pass through the gate into the burned out rubble of Dr. Warren’s house in the real world. It took them weeks of reading the Necronomicon in the dreamlands, but they discover that only three days have passed in the real world.
Rosco and Frankie have Dr. Warren’s Necronomicon, but in the waking world it is unintelligible because it is written in Greek.

      CONSEQUENCES
Every character who went temporarily (or indefinitely) insane due to the byakee or during the visit to the Dreamlands will gain +5% Cthulhu Mythos. Rosco and Frankie gain an additional +12% Cthulhu Mythos from reading of the Necronomicon.

Andrew Rosco and Frankie Nelson have completed an initial reading of the Necronomicon and have learned the spell “Dream Gate” which is similar to the rulebook spell “Gate” but creates a gate to the Dreamlands for 20 POW. To cast it again, they will need the book as a reference. To learn Gate or any additional spell so that it can be cast from memory, they must spend 2d6 weeks and succeed in an INT check for each spell. Spells can be learned much more quickly if the book will be eferenced during the casting.

To learn from the Necronomicon in the real world, the reader must understand Greek. The Necronomicon has the following spells to learn: Call/Dismiss Azathoth, Call/Dismiss Cthugha, Call/Dismiss Hastur, Call/Dismiss Nyogtha, Call/Dismiss Shub-Niggurath, Call/Dismiss Yig, Call/Dismiss Yog-Sothoth, Contact Ghoul, Contact Deity/Nyarlathotep, Contact Sand Dweller, Dominate, Dread Curse of Azathoth, Dust of Suleiman, Dream Gate, Elder Sign, Powder of Ibn-Ghazi, Resurrection, Shrivelling, Summon/Bind Byakhee, Summon/Bind Fire Vampire, Summon/ Bind Servitor of the Outer Gods, Summon/Bind Swarm of Serpents, Voorish Sign.
The requirements of these spells may differ from the rulebook.
